‘when two givers indulge in a connection, it’s like magic. It’s alchemy.
I water you, you water me
we never drain each other, we just grow’
– billy chapata
For me, Raksha Bandhan has always been about my mother’s coconut mithai, lunch at nani (grandmother’s) house and a reminder of the joyous love filled childhood I’ve had thanks to my cousins. But something about what it stands for symbolically bothers me a wee bit. Over the last two years, we have taken the festival of Raksha Bandhan as an opportunity to redefine what the festival means to us. No matter whether it’s a bond between a brother and sister or two sisters or two brothers, this year we are hoping that we can show our children that two people can promise to love each other, care for each other and protect each other irrespective of gender, age and tradition.
So long story short, this year again we’ll be selling a limited batch of handmade and upcycled rakhis in pairs, so that both the siblings/cousins can promise a bond of love and care to each other 🙂
Our vision is to be a less waste brand. Because zero is a very difficult one! But we are trying! And that involves us going to the production unit and collecting chindis (scraps) literally from the floor and telling the master umpteen number of times to save every tiny piece of scrap like the ones you see in these pictures. Just so we can upcycle them and give them a life!
These Rakhis are handmade and up cycled by the very lovely women at ‘Oh Scrap’ Madras.
These rakhis can also be used as hair accessories and given yet another life post Raksha Bandhan!
